Year One

Our Class teacher is: Miss Davies

Teaching Assistant: Mrs Richardson.

Maths:

This term, pupils will explore numbers to 10. They will count using one-to-one correspondence and use ten frames to represent numbers. They will then write numbers using both numerals and words. Pupils are introduced to the concept of 0 by counting backwards from numbers below 10.  Pupils will compare numbers using the terms 'greater than', 'less than' and 'as many as'. They will explore which numbers are greatest and smallest in a series, and order numbers to show value. In the final lesson, pupils will show '1 more' and '1 less' using concrete materials.

In Autumn 2, Year 1 pupils will explore the building blocks of numbers. In the first lesson, pupils will learn different ways of making numbers using number bond diagrams. In the second lesson, they will use their understanding of number bonds to create number stories using pictorial representations. These lessons are designed to support pupils' understanding of number and the versatility of numbers for later use in mental methods.

Science: Weather and Seasons

In Year 1, pupils will have the opportunity to explore the world around them by:

  • Observing changes across the four seasons.

  • Observing and describing the weather associated with each season.

  • Learning how day length varies throughout the year.

This exciting learning journey takes place across the whole academic year, allowing children to notice and describe the changes as they happen. We are currently exploring Autumn, observing how the weather changes, the days become shorter, and how trees and nature prepare for the coming winter.

Geography: My Geography

This term, Year 1 pupils will be developing their geographical skills by exploring their local area. The children will go on a walk in the community to observe key human and physical features, such as houses, shops, rivers, forests, and hills.

They will learn to use basic geographical vocabulary, simple compass directions (North, South, East, West), and positional language (near, far, left, right) to describe locations and routes on a map. Pupils will also use fieldwork and observational skills to study the geography of their school, its grounds, and the surrounding environment.

Art: Drawing, Exploring Line and Shape

This term, Year 1 pupils will be exploring how lines and shapes can be used in drawing. They will learn to spot shapes in everyday objects and artwork, experiment with different types of lines and pressures, and use shapes to help draw faces. Inspired by the artist Brianna McCarthy, children will create their own artwork while developing their ability to talk about what they like and dislike in art.

Important information.

Reading books will be changed every Friday. Please read regularly with your child at home to build fluency and comprehension skills. Encourage your child to use 'Fred talk' when sounding out new words - they are familiar with this way of reading in school.

Year 1 PE sessions take place on a Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child brings the correct kit every week.
