Welcome to Year 2
Welcome to Year 2! This is an important year, where children continue to build their skills from Year 1 and prepare for the transition into Key Stage 2.
In Year 2, we work hard to develop confidence in reading, writing, and mathematics, while also encouraging independence, resilience, and a positive attitude to learning. Pupils take part in a wide range of exciting learning experiences across the curriculum, helping them to deepen their understanding and develop new skills.
We continue to use elements of continuous provision within the classroom to support learning. This allows children to access a range of carefully planned activities that reinforce key skills, encourage independence, and provide opportunities for exploration and creativity. Through this approach, pupils are supported to take greater ownership of their learning and apply their knowledge in different contexts.
There is a strong focus on handwriting and presentation in Year 2. Children are encouraged to take pride in their work by forming letters correctly, developing a neat, consistent style, and presenting their work clearly across all subjects. These skills are important in preparing children for the expectations of Key Stage 2.
Building on their phonics knowledge from Year 1, children continue to develop their reading skills with a growing emphasis on understanding and comprehension. Pupils are supported to move beyond simply decoding words to thinking more deeply about what they read—discussing texts, answering questions, and making simple inferences to show their understanding.
Towards the end of the year, children complete their Key Stage 1 assessments in reading, writing and mathematics. These are carried out in a calm and supportive environment and form part of the ongoing assessment of each child’s progress.
Most importantly, we strive to ensure that learning remains enjoyable and engaging, helping every child to feel proud of their achievements as they grow in confidence and prepare for the next stage of their school journey.
Important information
This half-term, children in Year 2 will have PE on Monday afternoons. Please ensure that children are prepared with all of their kit for this day.
Regular reading helps children to develop their fluency and comprehension skills, and in turn, allows them to access the rest of the curriculum. Reading books will be changed on Fridays. We will send home a reading book each week to match their phonic ability. Please bring your child's reading book into school each day so that we can continue to read with them in school also.
Spellings will also be given out on a Friday and need to be learnt for the following Friday when the children will do a spelling test. The children will also be told about a times table test each week - these will either be 2, 5 and 10 times tables.
